Improving life for new wheelchair users by combining empathy and virtual reality
Improving life for new wheelchair users by combining empathy and virtual reality

VR proof-of-concept produced with the hope of providing new wheelchair users with a safe and empowering environment for learning how to navigate their chairs.

A self-initiated endeavor developed between client work, this passion project was originally born out of a study on ways to facilitate empathy through immersive experiences. The focus on accessibility's human impact was inspired early on in the brainstorming process after viewing Jason DaSilva’s documentary 'When I Walk', which depicts the often difficult transition to wheelchair life.

I directed this side project, synthesizing our research to focus on the human impacts and devising our intent of the prototype.

As I designed the challenges and overall layout, I oversaw my partner's development of the virtual environment and code. Additionally, I drafted and fabricated a streamlined easy-to-mount system for users to attach the data encoders to the chair.

I later returned to the project to produce case study materials with the goal of getting the word out to potential backers for funding the further expansion of our prototype.
